1967 Bar Update

1967 bar gets redone.
We'll miss the snack bar signs, though. Fun times!

TAKE THE TOUR:

No doubt, this house was built for entertaining!
We often give friends "The Closet Tour."

There's the Confessional,
the many hall closets which now house camping gear, athletic equipment, etc.
and of course the the Narnia Closet with the massive glass wardrobe.

But behind these folding doors (in classy Prohibition style),
is the wet bar!

Love that vintage icemaker (which doesn't work)
and the nifty little sink which is missing a drain.

Of course, the great thing about this space is that
it doubles as a snack bar for pool parties whenever the grandgirls visit!
Fun times!!!

 Dark-stained cabinets and wine-rack
give the space an Old World wine cellar feel.

Travertine countertops and accent wall,
and a functioning sink!

All that's missing is the wine-cooler, which will
fit nicely in the space below the wine rack (can't wait for Christmas! :)

GIRS BATHROOM

The infamous "Girs" bathroom finally got a make-over!

which matches the new vanity, plenty of storage!
Medicine cabinets, faucets and hardware in Old World oiled-bronze.
A fresh countertop, dressed up with tumbled chiaro tile in subway pattern.

simple, recessed light above sink provides plenty of wattage,

and an inset tile shelf for decorative accessories
provides more space available.

BUT the STAR OF THE SHOW
 is truly that travertine tile!!!
Love the color, and the natural stone finish.
Classic look, ties all the colors together!

Kitchen Updated

Nothing like taking a space and making it happier!

This kitchen needed an update, but it had really good bones!

A little (maybe more like a lot) paint on the cabinets,
 re-creating an island,
 and--of course--some spiffy new appliances
breathed new life into this ol' space. And look at it now!!!

AFTER:

TAKE THE TOUR:

After inspecting the existing cabinets to make sure they were in good shape,
Scott (the Danish carpenter :) got to work on tear-out.
That may just be his favorite part.

With the large "elephant in the room" gone,
the kitchen already felt more spacious!

We configured an island with plenty of storage out of oak cabinets:

Modern track-light fixtures and some stylish pendants over the island
replaced the dated fluorescent fixture:

Black granite tiles create a classy countertop
and a dark stain on the island and trims tie it all together:

The cabinets get a light shade of sophisticated gray.

The black sink blends with the tile, complete with a new brushed-satin nickel faucet:

Starting to come together!

(That's a chiaro stone tile BACKSPLASH in subway pattern--new favorite!)

Hardware on the island and those new stainless-steel appliances really pop!

And that old bar-top? Gone!
Replaced with a walnut butcher-block top. Beautiful!

Favorite design feature:

instead of removing existing dark wall paneling,
client chose to have it painted the same color as the cabinets.
The walls are a very soft shade of gray, while the cabinets and wall panels
went a shade darker. Love that look!

Outdoor Additions

Updating outdoor spaces is one way to increase "living" square footage without extensive building costs. Especially if you live in a moderate climate, like Mississippi. Which we do. Thus we like to spend time outside :)

At this very cool lakehouse getaway, the request
was for a comfortable screened-in porch with a view.

This is the perfect place to stop and "set awhile" with a cool drink,
a good friend or a good read. Can't take credit for the view:

Using an existing covered patio, we added screen walls and doors
that keep the bugs out without blocking the view.

Take the tour below:

The front stoop is also a great place to gather and admire the view!

With a few updates, this outdoor space is now ready for a crowd.

A safe set of stair-rails is a must:

Aaah, life on a lake :)

Affordable and Stylish BATHROOM

Affordable and Sophisticated. The 2 can coexist!

A recent USAA Financial Report entitled "Remake Your Bathroom" stated that "a complete bathroom remodel ranges from $17,000 for basic improvements to $50,000 for the luxe look." Whatever end of the scale your bathroom remodel falls at, that's a hefty investment! Especially since most people only recoup approximately 60% of that investment when they sell their home.

To us, family time/vacations and broadening travel experiences trump high-end renovations. Hands down. Don't get  me wrong; we will install any finishes our clients choose, but with the wide range of quality, affordable finishes out there (ranging from tile to light fixtures) homeowners can truly keep their renovation costs down without sacrificing style or durability!

The above article finished by stating that homeowners determined to really keep costs down should not try to change the location of the fixtures because every time you move them, you have to reroute the plumbing which will raise costs significantly. So true!

To prove our point, that renovations can be affordable and stylish, we are  highlighting a recent bathroom job which we completed this summer. Not only did we come in under the $17,000 mark, but the bathroom was built in an existing bedroom which means that ALL of the plumbing had to be created/rerouted from existing locations! Just goes to show that with the right team and careful choices, homeowners don't have to break the bank to get the room of their dreams!

HERE'S THE TOUR:

It started with a room, just a plain old bedroom:

Tear out a few walls:

Laugh at the 1970s flooring:
And rebuild! We started with the master bedroom floor,
which ties into the new bathroom flooring. Love that rich color!

A new ceiling fan and trims dress it up nicely. And that doorway?
That's new, too! This bedroom turned master bath is off-limits to house guests!

In a room which was once an empty 10x10 space,
a luxury walk-in shower, Jacuzzi tub and double vanity now happily coexist.

The solid-wood vanity and granite top are highly-desirable
finishes, but are also affordable because they are both in-stock items.
Clients pay a hefty cost when they begin to special order custom finishes!

The spacious, walk-in shower will have a glass door
with oiled-bronze hardware to go with the Old World feel
and rich tones of the room.

Save on plumbing costs whenever you can by sharing "wet walls."
The plumbing for shower and tub were minimized by installing back-to-back.

Pulling the flooring and wood trims onto the tub face
bring the whole look together.
Jacuzzi tubs need to have an access for maintenance, so
never tile up the tub face!
And don't forget to have items tested before they're installed
(failing to do so will void the warranties!)

Finally, a private "water closet" allows the bathroom to be
even more functional, and provides extra storage as well.

From start to finish, this bathroom has everything a master bath
should have, plus plenty of sophistication and comfort!
